Self-Sponsored Visa Reimbursement

Unfortunately, because we are remote with no physical offices, we are unable to sponsor visas at this time. This includes visas for people who need sponsorship for work authorization and for people who are emigrating to another country. We hope that in the future the visa rules will change to be more conducive to remote companies and are monitoring the situation in the US, UK, and other countries where we have team members. If you are emigrating to another country, you are responsible for obtaining your own visa and ensuring that you comply with all local relocation and visa rules.

To support this, thoughtbot will reimburse up to $1000 USD for the initial cost of obtaining the visa and for renewal costs for self-sponsored individuals (such as those on on EB-1 and EB-2 visas in the US), in each year that a renewal is required. Renewal costs include filing and legal fees.

This benefit is for the employee only and does not apply to dependents.

International Moves Due to Safety Concerns

Team members relocating due to safety concerns including but not limited to war and the threat of persecution will receive additional financial support towards obtaining their initial visa, as applicable. thoughtbot will cover up to $3000 USD for the initial visa costs including filing and legal fees. Anyone relocating due to safety concerns should contact benefits@thoughtbot.com for assistance and approval. When able, thoughtbot will pay the costs directly so that the team member does not incur the initial cost or need to wait for reimbursement. In certain cases, thoughtbot may provide additional support.

Please note that Geronda Wollack-Spiller, thoughtbot’s DEI Program Manager, geronda@thoughtbot.com is available to offer additional support to anyone relocating due to the threat of persecution.
