Benefits vary by country in accordance with each country’s employment laws. This page serves as an overview of benefits for Turkey. The Employer of Record for Turkey, Remote, can provide additional details on the benefits that they administer (denoted below with *).
In addition to location-specific benefits, Shared Benefits are available to all team members.

All holidays are determined by the Employer of Record and may vary by year. Religious festival days change every year because they are based on the Islamic Hijiri lunar calendar.
Annual leave/Vacation*
Our Turkish employment contracts issued by Remote list that team members are “entitled to 14 working days paid holiday after 12 months of work.” In compliance with the contract, thoughtbot provides the following: Team members accrue 20 working days of vacation during their first year of employment. Any unused accrued time from the first year will be lost on the first anniversary.
After the first year of employment teammates will continue to accrue 20 days of leave monthly at on employment anniversary, any unused balance can be carried over from year to year. Borrowing ahead is not allowed. The accrual increases to 25 days per year on the third anniversary at thoughtbot.
Sick Time*
thoughtbot ensures 10 days of fully paid sick time per year.
In Turkey, the first 2 days of sick leave are normally unpaid. The 3rd through the 10th are paid by the social security office. Teammates are entitled to sick pay from the state from the third day of sickness to at either two-thirds or one-half of the daily gross wage depending on the nature of the illness/injury.
Parental Leave*
All thoughtbot team members are eligible for both paid and unpaid parental leave after the birth or adoption of a child. The paid and unpaid leave can be combined for up to 6 months (counted as 26 straight weeks regardless of holidays) of total time off and must be completed by the 1st birthday or 1-year adoption anniversary. Additional extended leave may be available in Turkey. thoughtbot ensures 6 weeks 100% paid parental leave for all non-birthing parents and 12 weeks 100% paid parental leave for all birthing parents. Public holidays are not additional paid days during any part of parental leave. In locations with their own system for paid leave, thoughtbot’s policy runs concurrently with the local system.
In Turkey birthing parents are entitled to up to 16 weeks of maternity leave at full pay. Up to 8 weeks out of this leave may be used prior to their child’s birth. At least 3 weeks must be taken before the due date. In the case of premature or multiple births, the total maternity leave will be 18 weeks. Payment during maternity leave comes from social security according to the regular contributions of the team member. Upon request, the mother may further receive:
- Unpaid leave for 6 months as of end of maternity leave;
- Half-time employment for mother (unpaid leave for half of the weekly working time for 60/90/120 days up to the number of children as of end of maternity leave)
- Partial work for mother or father (a right to work part time until the end of the month when the child reaches primary school age, provided that both parents are working)
In Turkey, adoptive parents of children under the age of three are entitled to eight weeks of paid leave, from the day their legal custody is established. In addition, such parents can request up to six months’ unpaid leave after adoption proceedings are finalized.
Marriage leave*
Team members can take up to 3 paid days of marriage leave to conduct their marriage rites and you can take more days off using annual leave.
Bereavement Leave*
Team members may take up to 5 paid days off anytime someone close passes away. This includes pregnancy loss. We understand the deep impact that death can have on an individual or a family. If you need more than 5 days off, you can also use your accrued paid time off or unpaid time off.
Medical Insurance*
Medical insurance is available through Allianz.
Payroll Cycle*
All payments are processed through Remote. Payments are made in equal monthly installments on or before the last working day of each month, payable in arrears. All bonuses, stipends, and reimbursements are added to the monthly payments. The cut off date for submitting and approving expenses is the 10th of the month.
Notice Period*
Notice periods in Turkey are determined by a team member’s tenure as follows: 0 – 6 months: 2 weeks’ notice 6 – 18 months: 4 weeks’ notice 18 – 36 months: 6 weeks’ notice 36+ months: 8 weeks’ notice
