Portugal Benefits & Details

Benefits vary by country in accordance with each country’s employment laws. This page serves as an overview of benefits for Portugal. The Employer of Record for Portugal, Remote, can provide additional details on the benefits that they administer (denoted below with *).

In addition to location-specific benefits, Shared Benefits are available to all team members.

All holidays are determined by the Employer of Record and may vary by year. In addition to national holidays, there are 2 regional holidays in Portugal Azores Day and Madeira Day for team members located in Azores and Madeira. Team members are also entitled to choose 1 local public holiday for their locality which should be entered into Rippling and Remote.

Holidays that fall on weekends do not normally transfer to weekdays. Official thoughtbot holidays cannot be moved. You should not work on a thoughtbot holiday.

Annual Leave/Vacation*

Team members accrue 20 days of annual leave in their first year and 22 days in subsequent years. Your accrual increases to 25 days per year on your third anniversary at thoughtbot. Team members can carry over unused annual leave, but specific expiration dates apply:

  • April 30th: For leave carried over from any year after your first year. There is no limit on the number of days that can be carried over.
  • June 30th: For leave carried over from your first year. The maximum carry-over is 30 working days of annual leave. After the expiry dates, team members can no longer take the carried over days.

Sick Time*

thoughtbot ensures 10 days of sick time per year. Team members can receive sick pay for up to 1,095 days through Portugal Social Security. Typically, the sick pay ranges from 55% to 75% of the employee’s salary. Sick reservations lasting 3 or less consecutive days should be entered in Rippling. Sick reservations lasting over 3 consecutive days should be entered in both Remote with a medical certificate, and also in Rippling. Here are some Instructions on how to upload a medical certificate in Remote. When you are out unexpectedly, you will generally make up lost client time and miss investment time that week.

Meal Card*

Team members are entitled to 7.63 EUR per working day (160 EUR/month), this can be used to pay for meals from food delivery services or at restaurants. The allowance is added to your Coverflex Meal Card at the end of each month.

Parental Leave*

All thoughtbot team members are eligible for both paid and unpaid parental leave after the birth or adoption of a child. The paid and unpaid leave can be combined for up to 6 months (counted as 26 straight weeks regardless of holidays) of total time off and must be completed by the 1st birthday or 1-year adoption anniversary. In some locations, team members are eligible for more time off. Public holidays are not additional paid days during any part of parental leave. In locations with their own system for paid leave, thoughtbot’s policy runs concurrently with the local system.

In Portugal birthing parents are entitled to 120 days of leave with full pay or 150 days with 80% of normal wages. Non-birthing parents are entitled to compulsory leave of 20 days, five days of the allowance must be taken immediately following childbirth and the rest of the 15 days must be taken within six weeks of childbirth. During statutory parental leave salary is paid by the Social Security system.

thoughbot ensures 6 weeks 100% paid parental leave for all non-birthing parents and 12 weeks 100% paid parental leave for all birthing parents. thoughtbot will top off the payment from social security to 100% pay for the first 12 weeks after birth for birthing parents, and for the first 6 weeks after birth for non-birthing parents.

Bereavement Leave

Team members may take up to 5 paid days off anytime someone close passes away. This includes pregnancy loss. We understand the deep impact that death can have on an individual or a family. If you need more than 5 days off, you can also use your accrued paid time off or unpaid time off.

Medical Insurance*

Medical insurance is available through AdvanceCare.

Bonus*

Team members in Portugal are entitled to vacation/Christmas allowance - Subsídio de Férias (Holiday Allowance) and Subsídio de Natal (Christmas Allowance). The gross monthly salary of the employee will be determined by dividing the annual salary by 14.

Payroll Cycle*

All payments are processed through Remote. Team members get paid once a month, typically by the last business day of the month. All bonuses, stipends, and expense reimbursements are added to the monthly payment, which is made on or before the last working day of each month, payable in arrears. If this falls on a weekend, then you will receive your salary on the Friday before the weekend starts. The cut off date for submitting and approving expenses is the 10th of the month.

Notice Period

The details of your notice period can be found in your Remote contract. The standard notice period for Portugal is a minimum advance notice of 30 days or 60 days depending on whether your contract has been in place for 2 years, or more than 2 years, respectively.
