Canada Benefits & Details

Benefits vary by country in accordance with each country’s employment laws. This page serves as an overview of benefits for Canada. The Employer of Record for Canada, Remote, can provide additional details on the benefits that they administer (denoted below with *).

In addition to location-specific benefits, Shared Benefits are available to all team members.

Annual Leave/Vacation

Team members accrue 20 days of annual leave per year. Your accrual increases to 25 days per year on your third anniversary at thoughtbot. Vacation can be taken immediately, and up to 5 days of unused vacation time can carryover to the next calendar year.

Sick Time

thoughtbot ensures 10 days of fully paid sick time per year.

Parental Leave*

All thoughtbot team members are eligible for both paid and unpaid parental leave after the birth or adoption of a child. thoughtbot ensures 6 weeks 100% paid parental leave for all non-birthing parents and 12 weeks 100% paid parental leave for all birthing parents. In locations with their own system for paid leave, thoughtbot’s policy runs concurrently with the local system.

In Canada birthing parents can take up to 15 weeks paid at up to 55% of their salary, up to a maximum of $638/week. thoughtbot parental leave for birthing parents would ensure fully paid 12 weeks by topping off the first 12 weeks’ pay to 100%.

In addition, birthing and non-birthing parents are eligible for a combined parental leave of either options below:

  • Standard: Up to 40 weeks, paid at up to 55%. One parent cannot receive more than 35 weeks of benefits.
  • Extended: Up to 69 weeks, paid at up to 33%. One parent cannot receive more than 61 weeks of benefits.

Bereavement Leave

Team members may take up to 5 paid days off anytime someone close passes away. This includes pregnancy loss. We understand the deep impact that death can have on an individual or a family. If you need more than 5 days off, you can also use your accrued paid time off or unpaid time off.

Medical Insurance*

Canada has universal healthcare, and team members have the option to enroll in supplementary coverage via Canada Life. The cost is shared between thoughtbot and the Team members.

Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP)*

thoughtbot matches up to 3% of the salary that you contribute. You can enroll in RRSP via Remote starting in 2023.

Payroll Cycle*

All payments are processed through Remote. Payments are made in equal semimonthly installments, payable in arrears. Any bonuses, stipends, and expenses reimbursements are added to the paychecks. The cut off dates for submitting and approving expenses for the semimonthly paychecks are the 6th of the month and the 19th of the month, respectively.

Notice Period*

The details of your notice period can be found in your Remote contract. The standard notice period for Canada is 2 weeks.
